The Iranian dissident group Mujahedin-e-Khalq (MEK) is calling on Europe to halt Iranian imports to protect human rights and rights of women and minorities. In its report on “Foreign Media Manipulation: How Europe Is Helping Iran," the MEK said that the European Union has allowed the Iranian regime to “criminalize religious and human rights activism,” to “manipulate the public agenda” and “force women to wear hijab or risk imprisonment.” “No civil society advocates for these rights in Iran, and no governmental agency provides any services to the LGBT community,” the MEK said. What’s more, Iran is violating human rights at home as well, the MEK noted. “Regrettably, the EU has been complicit in the regime’s repression and crimes against the Iranian people,” the MEK said. “It has sanctioned the Iranian regime and maintained relations with it, despite serious concerns about human rights.” The MEK report noted: This has allowed the Iranian regime to criminalize religious and human rights activism, as well as deny women access to abortion and the right to divorce. Iranian women, in particular, are punished for having an abortion or for being raped. Many have been imprisoned. Women’s rights are also violated by the obligatory forced hijab. The MEK said Europe's “open approach” to Iran has led to the imprisonment of over 17,000 political prisoners since the 1979 Islamic revolution. That's because Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) have routinely arrested dissidents outside Iran. “As a result, those who cannot return to Iran, are at an extremely high risk of facing torture and imprisonment,” the report said. Europe has refused to follow the United States’ lead and sanction the IRGC.
